City installs fences at PTIs to assist with COVID-19 safety measures

The City of Cape Town’s Transport Directorate has installed temporary fences at various Public Transport Interchanges (PTIs) across the metro as an additional safety measure in compliance with COVID-19 health regulations. The initiative forms part of the directorate’s efforts to contain the spread of the pandemic. Read more below:
‘The speed fencing initiative provides a form of access control at the PTIs and allows us to screen commuters before they enter the facility and proceed with their travelling. Thousands of residents depend on public transport to get to work or school every day. As such, the City is trying its very best to create awareness of COVID-19 symptoms among commuters at the PTIs and to create a safer public area for all,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Transport, Alderman Felicity Purchase.
To date, speed fencing has been installed at the PTIs in Nomzamo, Somerset West, Mfuleni, Nyanga Central, Nyanga Junction and Parow.
Plans are currently underway to also install fences at the following facilities:
- Bellville
- Kuyasa
- Philippi
- Claremont
- Kuilsriver
- Lentegeur
- Durbanville
- Fish Hoek
- Retreat
- Maitland
- Athlone
- Blackheath
- Mitchells Plain
‘The COVID-19 pandemic is still with us and I want to remind commuters to please keep on wearing face masks when in public, to continue washing and sanitising hands often, practicing social distancing, and to avoid commuting when they do not feel well. By working together, and taking responsibility for our health and safety, we can stop the spread of the virus,’ said Alderman Purchase.
